Initially the principal of the school, did not like the word “dog” in the title of the project and did not want his students posing with Foto. He stated “Haitian do not like dogs and to refer to someone as a dog is an ugly term.” Our translator explained in Creole that “people generally hate rodents, yet Mickey Mouse is the most recognized cartoon figure worldwide. Likewise a small stuffed dog is not a real dog.” He accepted and understood how little Foto is a mascot/prop and unites all the children and photographs. He actually asked to have his picture taken with Foto too!

Denis served as the translator for the Dog Meets World photo tour to Haiti in April. He immediately took on the role of expert printer too! Denis so enthusiastically embraced the project, that we left behind equipment so he could continue to help get photographs in the hands of Haitians in need. This is just one of well over 100 that he has contributed. Thank you Denis!

Principal Jacky Dorleans writes “during your stay in Haiti you made hundreds of people happy by not only taking their pictures, but also by handing them almost instantly their own very first pictures. Merci, Merci beaucoup on behalf of our students. What I like the most, while I was looking at the pictures, is how every child has a unique way to hold “Foto” the dog to express their pride. I am pretty sure that you are already making plans for another trip, and for your dog to meet new people and families in different points of the globe. Thank you very much!” Join this movement and you could be the next phodographer!!

The little stuffed mascot Foto is taking a ride. Cite Soleil means City of the Sun and it’s definitely toasty in Haiti. The heat did not dampen the fun of passing along Foto, the puppy prop. Foto, seen in all the pictures, unites Dog Meets World photos from around the world and identifies them as part of a project to get photos in the hands of all the world’s children in need.

Best Foto of the Week!
