The Daily Foto: Spontaneous Acts of Kindness in Honor of Sept. 11

Phodographer Kelly Crane in San Ramone Costa Rica, July 2009
While on a church mission trip, Kelly recounts “these refugee boys spontaneously picked up shovels to help us dig small drainage ditches. After a short while, one of the crew members came over and said that the three boys had dug too far in the wrong direction and asked us to fill in their ditch. I knew immediately from the boys’ expression of defeat that they didn’t understand why we were covering up their hard work. The boys looked so disappointed. I thought to myself, “enough of this- where is that Dog Meets World equipment?? They were bewildered by the small printer I pulled out of the box. Amy Speckman (shown here) helped me set up and take photos. We took the first pictures of these three boys and they were thrilled The children were overjoyed with seeing themselves and being able to keep their first photo!”

Amy said that these sisters were so close they absolutely insisted on taking their first picture together. They did not even want individual pictures, so she printed up a copy for each of them.
The Daily Foto: Innocence Captured

New Phodographer Amy Speckman in Bajo Tejares, Costa Rica, July 2009
With a brand new camera in tow, Amy Speckman resonated immediately with DMW…she said “Everyone on the trip was so touched at how much joy the pictures brought! I would never have imagined the impact it would have on them and on me! Taking their pictures gave me an opportunity to talk to them for a moment, ask them their name and their age and a few other personal questions while I was setting up each shot. I feel like I have 400 friends in this village now!” What a perfect definition of photo diplomacy.

I love photography and was thrilled when our pastor at the mission house in Costa Rica asked if anyone would like to take an a new photography project.” Kelly found the children “were absolutely amazed by the whole process and it thrilled them to see themselves in a photograph.”
