Foto’s Blog: School Pictures at School in Belize

Phodographers Carolyn and Austin Lane in San Pedro, Belize, Sept. 2010
What could be more fun than volunteering to take school pictures while on vacation. It’s hard to imagine that all school kids don’t get pictures. We photographed 6 classes highlighting the children against the backdrop of the pretty mangroves and water. Dog Meets World donated a printer and supplies so all the students could be given their pictures!

While on holiday in Belize, I rode around in a golf cart—the MAJOR form of transportation on Ambergris Caye near San Pedro. With the help of local high school student Maverick Aguilar we randomly stopped and printed up personal pictures in the government housing area of town. This mom was super pleased to have first pictures of her children, including her new born. Maverick had never done a charity activity like Dog Meets World and exclaimed with joy “I love this job!”. Connect cultures and become a phodographer.

Belize is well know for it’s extraordinary barrier reef. See Foto, the mascot enjoying the undersea panorama. At 185 miles it’s the longest barrier reef next to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Dog Meets Worldco-founders Carolyn and Austin Lane combined a scuba diving vacation with DMW activities. With the help and the advice of the Banana Beach staff on Ambergris Caye, we practiced Take & Give Photography! These teens loved their pictures. Anyone can add DMW to vacation time to really interact with locals!

One Child, One Foto
By Samantha Coffin for Dog Meets World
Dog Meets World is a photo diplomacy project where photographers traveling the world bring a camera, portable photo printer and the stuffed animal dog named Foto. Once abroad the photographers begin taking pictures of the children with Foto, printing them and handing them to the children. The photo is theirs to keep.
Becoming a Dog Meets World phoDOGrapher only made sense to me for who I am and what I believe in. I was on my way to study abroad in Africa when Carolyn Lane, founder of Dog Meets World, placed Foto and a Canon Portable Printer in my hands. I knew then that my experience abroad would be more than I could ever have wished for.
After spending six months in South Africa practicing Dog Meets World, I then traveled to Zambia and continued spreading the love of gifting a child with a photo. The children of Zambia are full of a different spirit and love than any other children I had met before. These children did not expect anything from me other than my temporary presence. When I took the camera out, they were still not expecting anything. They lined up in a single file line and came up one at a time for the photo. Once I began the printing process, the children were amazed. I then handed them something they had never seen before, a photo of themselves. My photographs capture a child’s emotions at the site of their first personal photograph.
