Daily Foto: The Look of Awe

Phodographer Melanie Sidran in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, January 2010
Melanie joined fellow members of the Univ. of Maryland Hillel organization to give up her winter break to volunteer at an orphanage in the DR. In her words…The children in the community who had never seen anything like the picture and printing process had such looks of awe on their faces. I can’t even begin to imagine what that feels like, but it was so special to experience. Thanks Melanie and group for your altruism!

Daily Foto: Joy in Jubba, Jordan

Phodographer Carolyn Lane in Jubba, Jordan January 2010
This young school girl in northern Jordan is thrilled that foreign visitors took the time to photograph her and then handed her a tangible image to keep as permanent affirmation. Photography is something to which everyone can relate, and using photos as a medium for understanding and connection is a powerful platform. Photo diplomacy is the new way to interact with local cultures for everyone. Become a phodographer.

Sharing DMW among professionals is a great venue for cross cultural connecting.
Daily Foto: Photo Day in Guanacasta, Costa Rica
Phodographer and Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) Kristen Woodruff writes “Dog Meets World is a perfect option for the Peace Corps. My idea is to keep the DMW printer circulating within Costa Rica to different PCVs to use in collaboration with projects they might already be doing- like my Chicas Poderosas (Strong Girls) group. And I like the Foto dog mascot. Kids like the dog, and Foto is a representation of the peace and the ideas of the project.
These are scenes from the kids photo day in my village. Only 156 people live in my village so I know them all. I got kids ranging from a few months to 11 years. The mom of the little baby was so happy to have a baby picture! It reminds me how in the States we take a millions of baby pics and have gigantic albums and everything and some of the families here don’t even have one photo of their kids when they´re infants.”
