Petra Jordan has been designated one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Petra among the ruins of ancient civilization dating from the first century, the carved rock facade make it seem as if time has stood still for thousands of years. These young Bedouin girls posed with Foto the dog and the modern camera captured the moment making this time stand still too. Sharing photography is truly sharing and preserving moments in time.

Dog Meets World phodographers took first pictures (while on a DMW photo tour last year) printed them on the spot and handed them out for the entire student body. The reactions ranged from happy gratitude to hurrying away to go show their mothers!

National Geographic Photographer’s thoughts on DMW

Dog Meets World founder Carolyn Lane recently met with O Louis Mazzatenta who retired after a 42 year career with National Geographic magazine. After hearing all about DMW Lou shared his impression “Dog Meets World is a wonderful way for travelers of all sort to be engaged with people in the countries they are visiting. In my extensive travels as a photographer and writer for National Geographic magazine, I have witnessed numerous crowds of tourists being herded about by travel agents. The agent spouts canned descriptions of sites being visited. There is little real interaction with locals. The Dog Meets World project is the perfect fix. There is no better or easier way to make immediate friends in a country than by taking their picture and giving it to them. If you want to have the sort of genuine trip memories you will recall later with friends and acquaintances, Dog Meets World is the way to go.”. See Lou’s famous first photos of the Terra Cotta Warriors at the current special exhibit in Washington, DC.

Phodographer Prof. Patrick Fleming in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Dec. 2009

img_8587 As a 2006 Fulbright Scholar to Kyrgyzstan, Prof. Fleming established close relationships at the International University of Kyrgyzstan. Returning in December 2009 he decided “How better to spread the ethos of Dog Meets World than to tell emerging leaders about the power of photography as a diplomatic and personal tool to building connections among the people of the world“. He gave a short lecture on NGOs, non-profits and DMW itself, and then gathered the group of English language students at the university’s main entrance for photographs. They retired to a classroom and watched their photos print out while he continued to explain the goals of DMW and how important humanitarian service is to our lives! See everyone posing with printer, photos, DMW concept paper (download at bottom of this webpage) and Foto in hand. What a great lesson.

DMW founder Carolyn Lane (shown) and humanitarian aid workers Mike (shown) and Linda Boyd helped hand out the newly printed photos, always a sweet moment of sharing! It’s like handing out tangible joy!
