The Daily Foto: Watching & Waiting

Phodographer Carolyn Lane in Strand, South Africa, Feb. 2009

The Daily Foto: Foto Wins over the Principal

Phodographer Carolyn Lane at a school in Ibo Beach, Haiti, April 2009
Initially the principal of the school, did not like the word “dog” in the title of the project and did not want his students posing with Foto. He stated “Haitian do not like dogs and to refer to someone as a dog is an ugly term.” Our translator explained in Creole that “people generally hate rodents, yet Mickey Mouse is the most recognized cartoon figure worldwide. Likewise a small stuffed dog is not a real dog.” He accepted and understood how little Foto is a mascot/prop and unites all the children and photographs. He actually asked to have his picture taken with Foto too!
