The Canon SELPHY CP780 is a great alternative if space is really limited. Supplies need to be carried separately. It has many similar attributes that has also made it incredibly useful on the road for the Dog Meets World project:

Here are some more details for those that need to KNOW:

“The SELPHY CP770 has big buttons, large display, and automatic red-eye correction makes it simple to use. Plus, a beautiful, long-lasting 4″ x 6″ photo takes less than a minute. With the rechargeable Canon NB-CP2L battery pack and you can literally print wherever you go…on the ground, on the back of a truck/car, on a bench, you name it.”

Compatible memory cards include SD™ Memory Card, miniSD Card, SDHC™ MemoryCard, miniSDHC™ Card, MultiMedia Card®, MMCplus Card, MMC mobile Card, HC MMCplus Card, RS-MMC?, Compact Flash® Card, Microdrive®, Memory Stick®, Memory Stick® PRO™, Memory Stick® Duo™ and Memory Stick® PRO Duo™. The following can be used with the addition of a special adapter sold separately: microSD™ Card, microSDHC™ Card, MMCmicro Card, xD-Picture Card® and Memory Stick Micro™.

“The dye-sublimation printing process yields an extremely durable picture. Colors are embedded in a thin strip of cellophane and are added by a heating process. The last coat of film applied to the print is a thin laminate that protects the photograph from UV radiation and renders it very water resistant. No ink cartridges with nozzles that plug up, no running out of one color and needing to replace the cartridge early, and no guessing how many prints from each cartridge. The ink cassette yields exactly 36 printouts all with perfect color!”

Canon NB-CP2L “Canon NB-CP2L Battery (sold separately) Field experience has shown this battery to have very long life and will print about 100 prints when fully charged. The battery is charged by placing it on the printer (do not turn the printer on) and plugging in the charging unit (included with the printer). Charge the battery before you leave and when you return to a electrical outlet, as it takes a couple of hours to fully charge.”

Canon KP108IN“Canon KP108IN Color Ink/Paper Set 4x6in (108 Sheets, sold separately) The Selphy portable printer requires special photo paper due to the dye-sublimation process. Unfortunately regular photo paper will not work.”

Of course other manufacturers make portable printers and you might consider any one of them that allow for use with a rechargeable battery, as most likely you will frequently be away from an easy plug-in source. Please send us feedback about your experience with compact printers in the field.
